Picture this- a P.E. teacher, a woman of strong stature and athletic build, lying flat on her back in the middle of the school grounds. And smack dab by her side, big fellow, JJ, standing there, his innocent face as surprised as any. Before you conjure up some odd James Bond movie scene, let me clarify that it wasn't intentional. At least, it wasn't meant to be. But yes, JJ was, unfortunately, the one who pushed her. Almost like a comical domino effect, she fell forward and landed on the ground, completely caught off guard. Come to think of it now, it would have probably made a funny yet hilarious, horror blooper scene.

JJ, in his mischief, didn't stop there. His little deeds of pushing others from behind became a regular occurrence, like clockwork. "Those were accidents!" he would always exclaim he didn't do it, his surprised eyes wide as saucers. They couldn't believe it and neither could I. But these little accidents kept amassing until they were no longer dismissed as minor incidents.

The Triggers

Before you put on the judgmental glasses, it's essential to understand that JJ isn't a normal kid. Not that he has a superpower or anything, though I wish he had. It's his unique sensitivity to certain things around him that makes him different. Let me break this down, layer by layer.

Imagine you're a young boy with an extreme aversion to animals. A picture of a dog on a book cover sets perspiration trickling down your forehead. An innocent butterfly flies by, and your palms start to twitch. That's JJ for you, a bundle of nerves set walking around a world full of pets and insects, he is autistic with developmental delay.

Then we have the curious case of the "Squeaky Symphony". You must be familiar with the squeaky sounds particular types of shoes make on certain floors? Well, JJ would wince as if listening to chalk screeching on a blackboard. Or how about the sudden beep sounds on television? Oh boy, did those set off an alarm in his brain! Like a cat on a hot tin roof, he would be on his toes in no time. A regular household was anything but for JJ.

The Steps Forward

No, I am not here to justify my son's actions. A mistake is a mistake, isn't it? However, as a dad, I have to decode his confusing world and understand what set him off.

First and foremost, it's absolutely critical to tackle these triggers, the root cause of all havoc. You can't fight a monster under the bed if you keep ignoring its existence. We started introducing him to a more peaceful environment, free of offending sounds and, of course, creatures.

The next step? Well, offering JJ the right emotional support. Kids, especially those as sensitive as JJ, need a pillar to lean on- someone who gets them, their fears, and quirks. And who better than his goofy old dad? When he sulks, I sulk with him. When he smiles, I make sure it spreads to his eyes. That's the dad code, after all!

In conclusion, JJ's school expulsion was not just about a frustrated kid pushing people around. It was a wake-up call for me, a lesson that taught me one simple yet profound thing - understanding and patience. JJ isn't an enigma. He simply is a boy with some triggers that, if managed correctly, can pave the way to a happier, healthier childhood. The school has proposed to allow him to learn from home on a tablet that they would provide and he could return to school only on Thursdays and Fridays.
